Searching for show puppy bitch
Hi, i am looking for a well angled, great moving blue bitch puppy.
She will be shown in the UK and will come to shows with me in Europe as well.

My name is David Phoenix and i have shown for not far off 30 years,I have owned bred or handled around 24 champions in four groups.
I have handled as a pro handler in the uk,Europe and Asia.

My main breeds have been GSDS, Great danes, Dachshunds,Schipperkes and Pekingese.

I have always been a huge Afghan fan and now have less dogs and more time to devote the time needed to present a Afghan in the ring.

I have a stated blue, but to be honest colour is not important, but correct angles in the fore and hind with outstanding movement are!!!!,Coupled with a great head.I am not asking for much!!!!!!.

I will over the next few months be visting some kennels and have arranged my schedule to spend some time watching afghans at some shows.

I have handled Afghans a few times and find them one of the exciting dogs to move in the ring.

I am on a natational breed club and judges commitee.

Thank you

David Phoenix

Hi David,

I guess you mean a correctly angled puppy? Well angled suggests over-angled, which is not correct in an Afghan. I hope you don't mind me mentioning.

Here's a litter of 12 blues - 6 of each.

I disagree that "well angled" means "over angled" - I guess one cannot use any positive adjectives either like "good" or "excellent"?

It is a long time since I left the UK but back then I remember phrases used in show reports such as "well turned stifles" - does this mean that what people looked for back then was wrong? "Shoulders have PLENTY of angulation" Hmmmm. Then we have "great length from hip to hock" - and "good angulation of stifle and hock". Has the standard been changed there too? I know they took out the faults paragraph, which IMO was a big mistake, luckily the Australians left it in!

Hi Stephanie,

Semantics, I agree, but how many times have you heard people complain about exaggerations creeping into the breed? They need to be fit for purpose, so we just need to be 100% clear we are talking about well angulated and not over-angulated.

Best wishes,

John

We also do not need to give people the idea that we need LESS angulation, these ARE Afghan Hounds, they are not supposed to be built like an Azawakh! I see the other side of the coin too - people justify UNDER angulated dogs (also called stick straight front and rear) because they are "balanced".
